How Do I Change My Subtitle Settings?

Learn how to turn subtitles on/off, set the subtitle language and change the appearance of subtitles by selecting your device below.

  Web

  How do I turn subtitles on/off and change subtitles language?

  1. On the video page, click on the Settingsmceclip1.pngicon. 
  2. Click on the arrow next to the subtitle completion percentage.
  3. On the subtitles list, select ‘Off’ to turn off subtitles.
  4. To change subtitle language, scroll down the list of available subtitles to select your preferred language.

  How do I change the appearance of subtitles?

  1. On the video page, click on the Settingsmceclip1.pngicon. 
  2.  Click on the arrow next to the subtitle completion percentage.
  3.  Click on Subtitle Appearance.
  4.  Manage your subtitle appearance preferences.

Currently, you can change:

    • Size: Select how big/small subtitles should appear.
    • Text style: Select a preset color and background combination for the subtitles to appear in.

  iOS

  How do I turn subtitles on/off and change subtitles language?

  1. Tap on the subtitles subtitles.png icon at the top right of the video page for subtitle options.
  2. Select your preferred subtitle language from the list of available subtitles to turn on subtitles. Tap "Off" to turn off subtitles.

  How do I change the appearance of subtitles?

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Scroll to the Hearing section and tap Subtitles & Captioning.
  3. Turn on Closed Captions + SDH.

  4. Tap on Style to customize the subtitle style. You can select one of the predefined styles:
    • Transparent Background
    • Large Text
    • Classic or Outline Text.
      • To view your new style in full screen, tap the full-screen icon .

  5. To customize a style, select Create New Style. You can change the font, size, and color of the text along with the color and opacity of the background.
    • Note: When Chromecasting from the iOS app, to set a background for your subtitles, instead of setting it in Opacity, please select Text Highlight instead.

  6. When you're happy with the new style, tap Save at the top of the screen. This style will be the default style for subtitles and captions.
          
  Android

  How do I turn subtitles on/off and change subtitles language?

  1. Tap on the subtitles subtitles.png icon at the top right of the video page for subtitle options.
  2. Select your preferred subtitle language from the list of available subtitles to turn on subtitles. Tap "Off" to turn off subtitles.

  How do I change the appearance of subtitles?

  1. Tap on the subtitles.png icon at the top right of the video page for subtitle options.
  2. Tap on Subtitle Style.

  3. This will bring you to your device's subtitle settings. Ensure that the setting is turned On at the top.

  4. To preview subtitle appearance, you can refer to the sample subtitles "Captions will look like this".
  • Language: Select the language in which you want captions to appear.
  • Text size: Select the size for your caption text.
  • Caption style: Select the style and color for your caption text and background.

  For subtitles without any background

  1. Tap on Caption style > Custom. A whole list of other custom options will appear.
  2. Scroll down to Background color > None.
  Roku

  How do I turn subtitles on/off and change subtitles language?

You can do this by visiting the Roku device settings and within the app.

On the Roku device Main Menu:

  1. Go to Settings. 
  2. To open the captions menu, select Accessibility. If Accessibility is not listed, select Captions. 
  3. Select Captions Mode.
  4. Choose between <Off>, <On> and <On Replay>.

Within the Viki app: 

  1. Go to the video. 
  2. Once it starts, press * (asterisk). 
  3. The video will pause and a pop-up menu will appear.
  4. Choose between <Off>, <On> and <On Replay>.
  5. Set the language preferred from the Closed Captioning option.

Note: On Replay will only show subtitles when you press the replay button on your remote. Use this option if you feel comfortable with the video audio language. You can use the replay button and the last 10 seconds will replay with subtitles.

After you turn subtitles on or off, the setting will remain. You will not have to turn them on or off again.

  Apple TV

  How do I turn subtitles on/off and change subtitles language?

Follow the steps below to set the subtitles language and to turn off the subtitles.

From the video page:

  1. With your remote, pause the video and slide up the touch feature to select the subtitles box on the right side of the screen. The subtitle pop-up box should appear above your play bar.
  2. Slide up or down the touch feature on your remote and select the language of your choice. English should be chosen as a default if the device is set in English. You can slide up or down to choose your preferred subtitle language or turn off the subtitles.

From the Viki homepage:

  1. You can also set/change the subtitles language by going to ‘Settings’ on the Viki homepage. Slide down the touch feature and select ‘Subtitle Language’ tab to change the subtitle language to your preferred language.

  2. You can set the subtitles to your preferred style:
    • Font size
    • Font style 
    • Font colour and opacity
    • Text box background colour

  How do I change the appearance of the subtitles? 

At the moment, you can only change the appearance of the subtitles on Fire TV on the device settings. 

To change your subtitles appearance, on the main Amazon Apps page:

    1. Go to Settings
    2. Select Accessibility
    3. Select Subtitles

You can set the subtitles to your preferred style:

    • Font size
    • Font style
    • Font color
    • Text box background color
