Set all dramas free to be translated

Although I'm sure the next won't like to most channel managers, this is the best solution for everybody: Viki, managers, QCs, etc.

The reason why the majority of dramas are delayed with subs is because all this thing of channel moderators, go's, etc, delay a lot the work flow to finish fast.

Just think of a subber:

He has 1 hour free to contribute on Viki. He opens Viki, he tries to find any drama/movie to sub from X language to X language. He finds some series but... Oh SURPRISE! All dramas have a channel moderator and you can't translate for dumb reasons: you aren't part of the team, you need to contact the channel manager, etc. The worst part: he wasted the full hour looking for a good drama to sub instead of actually contributing on it.

Then, imagine the next situation:

He has 1 hour free to contribute on Viki. He looks for a series/movie to sub. He finds one in just 5 minutes. He opens a chapter which needs subs. He subs for 55 minutes in a row. He contributes with several subs / full chapters.

What Viki needs is to reorganize the objectives of people:

  • Channel managers must only watch chapters are being translated and verify all parts of a drama have been subbed.
  • Language modders must only verify that all the subs have been rightly done and correct any type of mistakes there could be.
  • Then, any QC who wants to contribute would be free to do so with no unnecessary filters which only delay the work flow.

At the very end, we all do a good work:

  • Channel managers provide a well-finished work in less time.
  • Language modders guarantee subtitles are excellent.
  • QCs translate. No loss of time searching for dramas nor contacting modders.

How won't it be a total mess?

Mainly from the acceptance of new QCs. Viki must explain the main reason to contribute is to help people have dramas/movies in their own languages.

Then, no one would want to harm subs nor incorrectly translate and/or use automatic translations.

At the very end, if a modder identifies there's someone doing a wrong work, then they could strike him. When this person has 3 strikes, their QC status is permanently removed or they can't translate for the next 3 months.

*Segments will still require a better organization where only approved members can seg. It's faster than subbing and it's an only-one-time work.

  • Hi there!

    "to finish fast"

To finish fast is not the first goal subbers/moderators and channel managers aim for - it is good translation, if you are interested in the topic you might like to read more about it, in case you didn't alreay, for example:

    https://discussions.viki.com/t/quality-over-quantity-how-to-avoid-bad-translations-in-subtitling/4183

"He has 1 hour free to contribute on Viki. He opens Viki, he tries to find any drama ..."

That usually not the way Viki works - as teams are formed and subbers need to be "added" to the channels, since there were problems with more than one subber in the same part of a video doing parallel subbing, one over-writing the subtitles of the other. Or subtitle abusers who just typed whatever ... I understand it, because sometimes it happens to me as well. When I am sick at home can't talk and not do much but eventually could subtitle a bit, then I may not have a team I am in and to be added to any project would probably take hours/days ... Yes, then chances for me to translate anything could be slim to zero, but for the better outcome I will still wait. Or contact anybody to see if someone is online. At least you need to know if the subtitler is good in the two language he/she is working on, that's unfortunately not a given.

"...he wasted the full hour looking for a good drama to sub ..."

That probably wouldn't be enough time ... If you are a subber who has time once in while, you will not really get into an on air drama channel, except you proofed once that you are an A+ translator and typist.

For not on air projects you'll need to find one and volunteers are already in talks with Viki to improve the volunteer/project finder as it isn't much of help.

    "...full chapters ..."

Let me ask what "full chapters" mean for you in relation to an episode of an hour length?

"Then, no one would want to harm subs nor incorrectly translate and/or use automatic translations."

It would be nice but, I have been here at Viki as a volunteer from 2010, when the subtitles were open as it could be and you would be QC with an amount about 300+ subtitles plus. And when Viki had more and more subbers it got messy and ugly inside the subtitle editor. With people not knowing where to put their subs, putting it into the wrong language and with no tool to stop them. Or abuser who would put breaks, points, in hundreds of segments. It's nice if we could only trust in all people, but experience proofed it differently.

"At the very end, if a modder identifies there's someone doing a wrong work, then they could strike him. When this person has 3 strikes, their QC status is permanently removed or they can't translate for the next 3 months."

This idea doesn't sound that bad, but to be executed ..? I don't know if it works, we got some changing IP and Viki ID still managing to come back ... So I am conflicted, well at least with the same ID it shouldn't work any longer. There is already have the abuser status for now ...

Thank you for your opinion, it's nice to see others thoughts and if all put their view maybe there will be a solution or at least an improval.
