[Solved] New ROKU app

Not gonna lie ----HATE the new Roku app.  It seems like a giant step backwards.  Why would you have to push pause TWICE to actually pause?????   Also when you pause, the screen darkens and there is other writing etc on the screen.  Sometimes I pause because the subs have several lines that I can't read quickly enough.  Now that will be much harder.  This is just getting started there is so much more that is awful about the new app.  Navigating between shows, options etc now takes several more steps.  An update is supposed to enhance and UPDATE. Not take it back several steps!

I'm sorry - but is there any way to roll back this app to the previous version?  I use the roku and my big screen TV to do final edits - and now ...not only does it take two clicks to pause it, but I can't see what I paused for...and...I lose another several seconds of something I am trying to review?

It also drops rather quickly into a screen saver....

The main reason I pause a show is to read something.  To be sure it's right, or to read it again - a cool lyric, or a sub with information in it.  We have some fast speakers in the world of Asian drama too - and as a person working on these dramas, those not intentionally slowed for other audiences around the world can blaze through words very quickly...and...sometimes you really want to read the whole thing.

Poetry...historical references...sometimes I want to look up something I see on another device.

But...if the words are now missing...and then it goes all screen saver...I can't do the things I usually do with this app.

I really hope this will be heard, and that you possibly can roll this back and find a way to not have it hide the words at least. :)

  • @Kristie -

One interim fix might be to add that 10 second rewind that's on the online app - this would allow the viewer to at least recover where they were and play back - possibly to get through whatever we're trying to see - if it will do this without the screen going black and covering the video and subs?

Anyway - that's all I can think of that might help - other than rolling this back if possible. :)

  • Wow, I didn't expect my original complaint to amount to anything so soon.  I guess this is why VIKI has been my "go-to" app  for many years now for watching a drama even when other apps out there have the same drama playing.  Since that worked so well, I have another suggestion.  Is there any way that the On Air list could hold 50 items like it used to?  Sometimes I forget what I have or haven't caught up on and this is a quick way to see what has been updated recently.   It was especially great for shows that didn't always put out new episodes weekly like "It's Dangerous Beyond The Blanket's".

  • Right on Ktonic !   Let me echo your concerns.

My Roku is using Version 2, build 1 and the pause and loop back problems are still there.  The main issue is the total disregard the version has for the viewer!   Perhaps the main reason to pause or loop back is to read the sub title that was timed so poorly.  Why obscure that part of the screen????????

In addition,  the Roku app does not need those control overlays.  My Roku has buttons for them

Viki is way behind Netflix and Prime in its player.  It is even behind DramaFever !

  • @ktonic,

    Thanks for the additional feedback.

I've passed it on to the team and they're looking how they can improve it.

    @c23s20_159,

Are you still having to press the pause button twice in order to pause videos and seeing the grey overlay?

This should have been fixed in the latest Roku update. Could you delete and re-install the Viki Roku app to see if it helps?

You can re-download the Viki Roku app by taking the steps in this FAQ.

Let me know how it goes and if you continue to experience problems.

    Cheers,
    Kristie

  • Thanks for your reply Kristie.

Version 2 pauses when I hit the 10 second rewind button on the Roku remote.  Then I must hit the navigation button to get to the 10 second, hit OK, navigate back to play, hit OK !  5 clicks that takes only ONE on Netflix !  I can cut this to three if I hit the play button directly.  I find it surprising that the IT team working on this do not have a Roku with remote to try it.  Therefore I made the comment "The main issue is the total disregard the version has for the viewer!"

The other problem is obscuring the caption with useless information. Instead of "Press * to change the language"  Why not merely "* language" The user knows that it means "Press to change". This would allow room to see the caption which is why the viewer is most likely using this function.

In addition, when the rewind is made the only display of the result is time! That is as bad as Drama Fever. Both Netflix and Prime Video give thumbnail views of the place you have rewound to.  For a viewer trying to navigate back to SEE something the time is not helpful.

Since the captions are the result of many volunteers' efforts  I have resisted commenting on their work.  However, that makes the job of the IT team more important.  The need to rewind and/or pause in order to decipher a poorly typed or too briefly displayed caption is all too frequent.  So please, work together !   The on-line player is much better.

  • The new update of Viki on the Roku Soundbar pro is horrible.

I can not select what language or genre which I can only do on my phone and not my TV.  I rather you set up the update it's not user-friendly.

I use to like selecting the language and what genre to view all the videos it was showing with their image and allow me to choose it, even if I did not speak that language.

With the new app, I have to know the name of what I am looking for which makes it hard if you do not speak that other Asian language.

Please undo the update and make it look like was a few days ago, please.  Thank you.
