Regulate Reviews and Ratings

We have all seen the disgraceful state of the Reviews feature. All the people who leave a bad review because it's not licensed in their region, or a good review because their favourite star is in it.

1. Disable the reviews submitting feature until a show has finished airing AT LEAST HALF of its programmed episodes.
2. Put a warning over the reviews, saying “Only use this for your opinion on the show, don’t rate it according to extraneous reasons such as subtitles percentage or having/not having a license in your region.”
3. On the flag, add one more reason to the flagging menu: rating for extraneous reasons (you may word it any way you like)
4. Have someone check the flagged reviews and delete them if they don’t conform to the guidelines.

Maybe people will still use reviews inappropriately, but I’m hoping that this will make them much less.

I know that people read reviews when the show has not finished airing, to decide whether to watch or not. But they can always read the comments, both on the main page and on the episode pages, to make up their mind. And that is why I didn't suggest to wait until the drama is completely finished but at least halfway.

  • I don't know about your first suggestion, but I am on board with the rest.

  • I totally agree with you on everything (maybe not the first one). I would like to also suggest having a channel mod position on the team that moderates the reviews and can put in requests to delete reviews or have the power to delete reviews. The reviewer can of course challenge the decision. In that case, Viki support staff can review the decision and deem it valid or not. I feel that flagging is just not enough personally. There is a need for more moderation.

  • It would be really very nice if they could give this power to the Channel Manager. But then, if the Channel Manager submitted for deleting twenty or thirty reviews (which might well be the case), looking into each one of those requests would mean extra work for Viki staff, and I don't know if they have the resources to do this. On the other hand, if they say "yes" without controlling, and the user challenges, they will have to work even more to look at it again, decide and maybe reinstate the review.
Frankly, I'd be willing to donate my own time to clean up comments and reviews, if they would trust me and allow me to do it. But I understand that it has to be one of the staff to take the final decisions.

  • The drama review and the epsiode comments have always confused me. There should be a better way to utilize these functions.

  • It would be nice if you could flag a review, and differentiate it by:

    - subtitle demand - if one flags for that reason, the writer would get an automized PM that the review was deleted and policy link.

    - asking questions/ technical/formal issues -                                           "

What to do with one line reviews "I like/love the drama"? I wouldn't call it a review, that would me want to watch a drama.

  • Viki needs to look into the reviews and ratings section. It is out of control. People randomly rating shows and this is BEFORE they have even aired!

  • If a review is more than 5 points away from the average… it is clearly out of line and is likely pushing another agenda… like subtitle issues. These extreme outliers damage the average rating by too large of a margin and therefore should be discarded from the averaging process. The comment can remain but it should not be included in the overall rating. If enough people vote something low such that the average comes down… then the gap will naturally close and the originally discarded vote would count again . This could be easily programmatically controlled and it would improve user experience because the ratings would be far more reliable.
