How do I change video quality?

Manual video settings are currently not available on the web and iOS app. Viki will automatically adjust video quality based on the strength of your network connection. 

You can also choose to limit the maximum video quality you receive on the web and Android. For more information, refer to this article.

The strength of your internet connection will dictate the quality of the video. Simply put, as your connection fluctuates, so will your video quality.

To change your video quality settings on the Android app:

  1. Make sure your app is on Version 6.2.0 or above.
  2. On the video itself, tap on _more.png on the top right corner:

To give you the best viewing experience possible on the web and iOS app, we automatically adjust the quality of your video stream from standard definition (such as 240p or 480p) to high definition (720p or 1080p), based on the speed of your Internet connection (bandwidth). This is why you may notice that the quality of your video changes and fluctuates as you watch videos. Here are some other factors that determine video quality:

  • Video player size: By default, the quality setting will be on “Auto” and we'll use the highest quality based on your video player's size.
  • Quality of the originally uploaded video: For example, if the video was encoded in standard definition, it will not be available in high definition.
  • Internet connection speed and reliability: By default, Viki is set to change video resolution automatically, depending on your Internet connection speed, whenever you watch a video. Automatic resolution settings can cause problems if you have an unstable Internet connection that's constantly speeding up or slowing down.

Identifying the issues for Poor Video Quality 

Wi-Fi Vs. Ethernet Connection Vs. Cellular Network

You may want to test video quality on using both a Wi-Fi signal and an Ethernet connection signal/cellular signal to see if you experience different results. This will help narrow down what might be causing the streaming issue. 

Run a Speed Test

Depending on your connection, internet speeds can vary by the second. To test your current network speed, try going to a website like We recommend at least a download speed of at least 2.0 Mbps for streaming video.

Restart your Wifi connection

  1. Unplug your router or modem from its power outlet (don’t just turn it off).
  2. Wait 15-20 seconds, then plug it back in.
  3. Allow the device a minute or two to turn back on.

It may seem simple, but doing this can solve many connection problems without the inconvenience that comes with resetting your modem or router.

There are, of course, some times when you’d want to reset your router or modem and start back at square one, but for most cases, simply power cycling the device will do the trick.

Note: Please keep in mind that your Internet service provider (ISP) could be the culprit of your speed fluctuation issues. If you're experiencing slow loading or poor quality video streaming, there’s a chance your internet connection is unstable.
